THIS NOVEMBER, IT'S ONE NATION UNDER A GROOVE
November is International Drum Month - Time to discover the many benefits of drumming

Drumming is hotter than ever. Just look at the success of the Fox movie Drumline, the Broadway spectacular Stomp!, or the organization Drum Corps International, whose awe-inspiring finals were recently broadcast on ESPN. Drumming is lots of fun, but it's also has many physical, psychological, and social benefits. Whether helping adults improve their health, teens learn discipline and dedication, or toddlers reach developmental goals, drumming's benefits cross generations, last a lifetime, and are open to everyone.

In November, the Percussion Marketing Council (PMC) will join in the celebration of International Drum Month 2005, using the spotlight to promote programs such as Developmental Drumming, Roots of Rhythm, and PlayDrums!. The PMC's message is that the groove is good for you.

How good? Health conscious adults will be fascinated to know that drumming is a big calorie burner: playing for one hour can burn as many as 280 calories. Drumming also is a great stress buster, and stress is known to contribute to heart disease and cancer. Lastly, drumming is a fun way to meet and share with others, and maintaining a wide social network is crucial to a healthy lifestyle.

Cool-hunting teens will appreciate that some of today's hottest drummers got their start in drum corps and marching bands, such as Blink 182's Travis Barker and Prince drummer John Blackwell. Practicing their moves and chops for up to 14 hours a day, drum corps drummers not only get a great work out, the life lessons they learn by following their passion are difficult to find anywhere else.

Parents will love to hear about scientifically approved programs that turn their toddler's love of bashing pots and pans into music making and movement curriculums designed to help them reach their developmental goals. There's even research, from the University of Toronto, that suggests early drumming programs can boost a child's IQ.

Who is drumming? Everyone - from toddlers to teens to adults, drumming is easy to learn and fun to do. Where are they drumming? From industry supported programs to informal drum circles, opportunities to play are more common than ever. How are they drumming? Thanks to manufacturer's efforts, there's an instrument out there for everybody, from the splashiest drum kits to the smallest hand percussion.

Why drum? Legendary drummer Sheila E. sums it up best. "Whether you're a recreational drummer or a serious professional, drumming can be a positive part of anyone's lifestyle," she says. "Drumming provides emotional, social, cultural, physical, even spiritual benefits, and since its easier to find great, affordable instruments, there's never been a better time to take up the drums."

Formed in 1995, the Percussion Marketing Council is a trade organization dedicated to serving drummers and percussionists.
