THIS NOVEMBER, DISCOVER THE WORLD THROUGH DRUMMING
November is International Drum Month - Time to Get in the Groove

Every culture plays drums. In the past, they were played for ritualistic, religious, ceremonial purposes. Today, they are just as likely to be played for reasons of physical fitness, spiritual renewal, or the sheer fun of it. Drums also are a powerful way to explore the multicultural world and to discover one's roots. The numbers flocking to Latin, African, Brazilian, Middle eastern and even Japanese drumming workshops across America is testament to drumming's cultural significance and new-found popularity.

In November, the Percussion Marketing Council (PMC) will join in the celebration of International Drum Month 2005, acknowledging the enduring spirit of World Drumming and encouraging people from all walks of life to find their groove.

African drummer David Coleman speaks to the benefit of discovering the world through drumming. "As the thread of life, it sews us all together. It keeps us going," he says. "It's extremely important for us to remember that throughout the world we are one family; through drumming our hearts all beat as one."

Today, the PMC is increasing awareness about world drumming with its Developmental Drumming and Roots of Rhythm programs. These programs are a fun, memorable addition to multicultural curriculums, but adults too are discovering their roots through drumming. In universities, cultural centers, and community halls across America, programs on Afro-Cuban Bata drumming, Central American Garifuna drumming, or South American Samba drumming flourish. Percussion manufacturers have responded to this interest. It's now easier than ever to find Latin percussion anyone can play, from large Brazilian Surdos (bass drums) and African Djembés to smaller Cuban bongos, maracas and cowbells.

It's widely recognized today that drumming has significant benefits for adults, whether they play alone or as part of a group. Latin drumming legend Sheila E. agrees, "Drumming provides emotional, social, cultural, physical, even spiritual benefits, and since it's easier to find great, affordable instruments, there's never been a better time to take up the drums." In fact, a session on the drums could very well improve your life. An hour drum session has been proven to lower stress and burn as many as 280 calories, while weekly music lessons have been shown to lower anxiety as well as depression.

This November, why not celebrate the history and presence of world drumming and spread the word about the wellness benefits of playing to your heart's content?
